Custom 304 Stainless Steel Metal Long Shaft CNC Milling Parts & Components are precision-engineered, elongated mechanical elements manufactured to exact specifications for demanding applications. These parts start as solid 304 stainless steel bar stock and are transformed through advanced multi-axis CNC milling into complex, high-tolerance shafts, rods, leadscrews, or spindles. The process excels at creating intricate features along the shaft's length, such as flats, keyways, splines, gears, threads, and precision bores, while maintaining critical straightness, concentricity, and surface finish. Product Processing

  1. Material Selection & Preparation: Certified 304 stainless steel round bar is selected, inspected for straightness, and cut to an optimized blank length. The blank may be stress-relieved if required for high-precision applications.

  2. Precision Turning & Centering: The initial blank is mounted in a CNC lathe or between centers to establish the primary diameters, create precise center bores for subsequent milling support, and ensure the shaft is running true.

  3. Multi-Axis CNC Milling (Core Process): The shaft is transferred to a multi-axis (3-axis, 4-axis, or 5-axis) CNC milling machine or a mill-turn center. Using specialized long-reach tooling and steady rests to minimize deflection, the machine performs operations such as:

    • Milling longitudinal flats or D-shaped sections.

    • Cutting precise keyways or splines along the length.

    • Machining gear teeth or helical features.

    • Drilling and tapping cross-holes or creating complex lateral geometries.

  4. In-Process Inspection & Straightness Control: Probing cycles and manual checks are performed during machining to monitor critical dimensions. Straightness is constantly verified and can be corrected in-process if necessary.

  5. Heat Treatment & Stress Relieving (Optional): For applications requiring specific mechanical properties or to relieve machining stresses in ultra-long shafts, heat treatment (annealing, solution treatment) is performed.

  6. Final Finishing Operations: This may include precision grinding for ultra-tight diameter tolerances, honing of internal bores, thread chasing, and vibratory finishing or electropolishing for superior surface quality.

  7. Comprehensive Metrology & Reporting: The finished shaft undergoes full inspection using CMMs, optical comparators, gear testers, and surface roughness analyzers. A detailed inspection report is generated.
